The Notre Dame Bookstore Basketball tournament started in 1972 and soon became a big part of the student experience. By the 12th annual tournament in 1983, the Guinness Book of World Records recognized the tournament as the largest five-on-five outdoor basketball tournament in the world. It now regularly hosts over 700 teams.
